Take Deva, his latest action-packed venture. Even before its release, there was an air of certainty that his performance will be lauded, much like Kabir Singh, Haider, Udta Punjab, and Padmaavat, where his screen presence and transformation into characters were nothing short of phenomenal. He embodies his roles with an energy that is infectious and a depth that is rare. Echoing a similar sentiment Taran Adarsh adds, “I was completely, surprised. I would not say surprised, but I would say I think bolder is the right term by his performance in Deva.” Continuing further the veteran Trade Analyst says, “He played it to the masses completely, which is what I liked. And with the conviction and the energy, I would like to add these two terms, conviction and energy, the kind of conviction and energy he showed in this performance, and the aggression, I think it’s superb.”
Shahid Kapoor’s range is one of his greatest assets. From the brooding and self-destructive Kabir Singh to the Shakespearean tragedy of Haider, he has proven his ability to balance subtlety and high-octane intensity. His romantic performances in Jab We Met and Vivah showcased a different side – one where restraint and effortless charm win over audiences. Even in comedy, such as Chup Chup Ke, his timing was impeccable, proving that versatility is his second nature. Speaking about Shahid’s evolution and performances, Taran says, “If you look at Shahid’s body of work, he’s been exceptional in several films. Even in Haider with Vishal Bhardwaj, I think he was excellent in that film, also Kaminey and Kabir Singh he was so good. But see what happens is that when you work with such directors, they extract the best out of you, for that matter, Shahid was good in Rangoon also, but again, that film did not work.”
More importantly, he has always been an actor first and a star second. His film choices reflect his hunger to evolve rather than simply cater to the box office trends. Even when placed alongside towering co-stars, as in Padmaavat, he holds his own, bringing quiet strength to his performances.

Voicing his thoughts on what an actor has to accept Taran reveals, “Hits and flops are part of this industry, one should not really write off, like how Shahid Kapoor was written off, or for that matter how Shah Rukh Khan was written off, Salman Khan was written off, Aamir Khan was written off. But they came back with a bang. So, I guess these things is something that the actors need to have the courage to actually absorb.”
His ability to bring layered, nuanced performances consistently -regardless of a film’s fate – is what makes him one of the most intense actors in Bollywood. Some actors are defined by their hits, while others are defined by their performances. Shahid Kapoor firmly belongs to the latter category.
