One of the biggest concerns fans had when it was announced that James Gunn would be helming the DC Universe reboot was that the franchise would be too filled with humor. This wasn’t exactly unfounded, as Gunn is most well-known for his comedy projects like Scooby-Doo and the Guardians Of The Galaxy. Many assumed that his style would continue on into projects like Superman, potentially making serious projects less serious than they should be.
James Gunn has, for the most part, pushed back against these fears. The director has made it clear that every project in the DC Universe will be treated as a stand-alone project with its own tone and storyline separate from the broader franchise being built. This includes Superman, which he has previously described as having a “quite different” tone when compared to his prior work on projects like Guardians of the Galaxy.
Will Superman Have Too Much Humor?
However, a new report suggests there may be a lot more humor in Superman than fans might expect based on James Gunn’s comments. Hollywood insider Matthew Belloni recently spoke about the DC Universe on his podcast The Town, remarking that he’s heard from people at Warner Bros. Discovery that there is “a lot” of humor in the upcoming film. This goes against prior reports about the film, that have likened its tone to projects like Captain America: The First Avenger and The Mummy.
It’s important to note that almost every action blockbuster these days have some amount of humor. So while this report does confirm that Superman will have jokes, it doesn’t mean that they’ll be the same type used in projects like Guardians of the Galaxy or Creature Commandos. Though with only a few months until the DC Universe officially kicks off, fans likely won’t have to wait long to learn the truth about the matter.
