Known for his role in Panchayat and Laapataa Ladies actor Durgesh Kumar is thrilled about the re-release of his film Highway, which originally premiered in 2014. Directed by Imtiaz Ali and starring Alia Bhatt and Randeep Hooda, the film has found new life as it returns to the big screen, much to the joy of the actor.
Durgesh Kumar shares happiness over the re-release of Alia Bhatt starrer Highway
When asked about revisiting the project after all these years, Durgesh Kumar expressed, “It’s an amazing experience. Back then, I was just starting my journey, learning through theatre for over 12 years. Getting this project felt like a dream. I remember the day of the shoot vividly, and I was overwhelmed with happiness that Imtiaz Ali had given me the opportunity. It brings back a lot of nostalgia.”
Durgesh also shared insights into how he prepared for his character in the film. “First of all, the production taught me driving for a month. Then, we spent seven days in Gurgaon with the local Gujjar community, studying their habits, language, and behavior. I immersed myself in the character, even going without a bath for 25 days straight. It was all part of the process,” he stated.
Reflecting on how Highway impacted his career, Durgesh said, “Before this film, no one knew me in the industry. After its release on February 21, 2014, I started getting a lot of audition calls, but it wasn’t easy. I didn’t land any work for the next three years. However, slowly, people started trusting me, and now, 11 years later, I’m proud of the journey.”
Regarding the film’s relevance today, Durgesh believes its themes remain universal. “The struggles within the elite class, which the film highlights, are still very much present. These issues exist behind closed doors, and they continue to resonate today. When I recently watched the film with friends, many of them, especially the women, told me that it’s still incredibly relevant,” he added.
Speaking about his experience working with co-stars Alia Bhatt and Randeep Hooda, Durgesh fondly recalled, “Alia was very supportive. During one dance scene, she told me, ‘You did very well, you’re a good dancer.’ As for Randeep sir, we met on the first day in Jaipur, and he encouraged me, saying, ‘Durgesh, you have to do it well.’ Both of them were extremely kind and down-to-earth, which is why they are at such a high level in the industry today.”
Durgesh also noted how his perception of the film and his character has evolved over the years. “Yes, my perception has changed. Many people have told me that the innocence I portrayed in the film was genuine. It’s the result of 12 years of practice and 25 years of dedication that make an actor who they are,” he concluded.
