Is Black Widow finally making her return? Scarlett Johansson speaks on if she ever plans to pick up the spandex in the MCU again.
Perhaps the most shocking death in MCU history was Black Widow sacrificing herself on Vormir for the Soul Stone. While it was clear that Scarlett Johansson was never going to play the character forever, it felt like she had so much more runway left, especially as her solo film was still on the horizon. Though given the messy situation surrounding Disney and lawsuits that resulted, many considered her return to the role to be out of the question.
Though now with the rift between Scarlett Johansson and Disney now mended, with the actress helping produce a still-hidden project for the MCU, hope has revitalized regarding Black Widow’s return to the MCU. Though with the Multiverse Saga on a ticking clock, the chance to bring that idea a reality is growing smaller and smaller by the day. Especially as Avengers: Doomsday picks up filming.
Will Black Widow Return In The MCU?
Though, perhaps taking some inspiration from David Zaslav cancelling the Batgirl film, Scarlett Johansson decided it’s time to crush some fans dreams. The actress was recently asked about a potential return in the MCU during an interview with InStyle. In response, Johansson emphasized that Black Widow is unequivocally, irreversably, dead.
“Natasha is dead. She is dead. She’s dead. Okay?” the actor told InStyle. “They just don’t want to believe it. They’re like, ‘But she could come back!’ Look, I think the balance of the entire universe is held in her hand. We’re going to have to let it go. She saved the world. Let her have her hero moment.”
Of course, it’s not a new thing for actors to lie about making their return in the MCU. Especially given how big of an announcement it would be to say Scarlett Johansson is returning as Black Widow after half a decade, it’s likely that Marvel Studios is saving that reveal for something big (if it does happen). Though given the Multiverse Saga officially comes to an end in two years, the announcement will likely come sooner than later.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters in May 2026. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
