DC Studios is coming out the gate swinging! Frank Grillo reveals the things he thinks James Gunn’s new universe is doing better than Disney and Marvel.

It’s no secret that Marvel, and the superhero genre as a whole, has been getting a lot of backlash in recent years. This has left many worrying that James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios will be starting on the backfoot, never able to truly find a groove with audiences. However, according to Rick Flag Sr. actor Frank Grillo, the studio already has a leg-up on the competition.

“Well, that’s a great question, given how the other guys have been in trouble a little bit. Because they got, I think, way over their skis, so to speak,” Grillo explained in a recent talk with CinemaBlend. “And I also think what James and Peter Safran are doing, where they’re hiring one actor to do live action and to do animation – the voice work – it creates a cohesiveness, and an understanding of the character.”

Marvel fans have certainly been left scratching their heads when it comes to animation. While most animated productions from the studio aren’t canon, some are, and some are dubiously so. By keeping everything created by DC Studios (mostly) under one umbrella, James Gunn and Peter Safran are certainly making it easier for fans to keep up with the projects they like.

DC Studios’ Biggest Strength Over Marvel

However, it seems Frank Grillo views one thing as even more important than consistency to DC Studios’ success over Marvel. Grillo continues in the interview to point out that James Gunn himself is an actual writer and director, meaning he knows how to integrate characters into a story more naturally than most other executives and producers.

“But, more importantly, [Gunn] understands how to utilize them in each story. And so there’s not an egregious number of people who you’re like, ‘Why is he (here)? What’s this? Are they trying to throw this character in just because?’ They have a different approach. We’ll see how it works out. But I feel a difference in it.”

Frank Grillo did hit the nail on the head that DC Studios has one key thing better than Marvel: It has two studio chairs in James Gunn and Peter Safran. While Gunn has a long history on the front-end creative side of things, Safran himself is a prolific producer that has had a long history of turning twine to gold. So even if the universe has an uphill battle, they’ll be pushing with twice the power!
