Interstellar’s re-release creates HISTORY; is the BIGGEST Hollywood hit in India in Q1 2025; BEATS new releases, Captain America: Brave New World, Snow White

The first quarter of 2025 has been a disappointing one for Hollywood. The initial three months of the year have been usually slow for the American film industry when it comes to their box office collections in India. But a few films have always managed to do exceptionally well. In 2023, John Wick: Chapter 4 emerged as a surprise super-hit. In 2024, Kung Fu Panda 4 and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire rocked the show; the latter was also the third-highest Hollywood grosser of last year.

In the first quarter of 2025, however, it is the re-release of the 2014 film, Interstellar, which is the highest Hollywood grosser. This is historic and probably has never happened before. In most markets, the Christopher Nolan classic was re-released in 2024-end, to coincide with its 10th anniversary. In India, Warner Bros decided to postpone the re-release as the month of December was crowded with the IMAX releases, Pushpa 2 and Mufasa: The Lion King. It finally arrived in cinemas on February 7 and managed to run with house-full shows, astonishing the trade.

The initial plan was to have only a one-week run as the demand for Interstellar was more in IMAX. This is because the IMAX screens were going to be unavailable from February 14 due to the releases of Chhaava and Captain America: Brave New World. As a result, there was a lot of urgency to catch the classic on the big screen, before it was out in cinemas. This led to steady collections even on the weekdays. Interstellar managed to collect nearly Rs. 20 crores in its one-week run.

However, many were unable to make it in the one-week window and kept demanding for the film to arrive once again in cinemas. Accordingly, Warner Bros re-released Interstellar on March 7. It’s been more than a month and it’s still running in cinemas with healthy collections. It lost out on IMAX screens in between but after the underperformance of Sikandar, it was back in IMAX from April 4 in limited shows. The film continues to attract audiences even now. The 4:05 pm show on April 12 of Interstellar at Miraj IMAX Wadala, Mumbai was nearly 40% full, which is a feat. It is now also running in 4DX formats, where it is getting 100% occupancy on the weekends.

As per trade sources, Interstellar has managed to collect nearly Rs. 29 crores to date in its re-release. The next best grosser is Captain America: Brave New World, which collected Rs. 20 crores approx. The numbers are nowhere close to what Marvel films have earned in the past in India. However, the film has put up decent collections globally, earning more than 410 million USD, which is much more than its budget of 180 million USD.

Snow White, earning around Rs. 6.30 crores, comes third. The film has been a disappointment across the world and its performance in the Indian market is no exception. Mickey 17 earned around Rs. 6 crores. Though it’s low, considering its global box office and niche subject, the earnings seem fine.

Lastly, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 was released in most markets on December 20, 2024. In India, it had a release on January 3, 2025 and collected a modest Rs. 5.50 crores approx.

The way ahead

There’s a little lesson to worry about as some sure-shot grossers will be hitting cinemas later this year. A Minecraft Movie, the first film in the second quarter, has performed beyond expectations and can earn around Rs. 15 crores. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, whose last part collected Rs. 119.53 crores, is expected to be the first Rs. 100 crore Hollywood grosser of 2025. A lot of hopes are also on Jurassic World Rebirth and that it would enter the Rs. 100 crore club. Meanwhile, trade and industry are confident that Avatar: Fire And Ash will cross the Rs. 300 crores mark since Avatar: The Way Of Water (2022) earned a huge Rs. 378.22 crores. Lastly, if all goes well, The Conjuring: Last Rites also has a chance at collecting Rs. 100 crores.

The other films from which one can hope for healthy box office earnings are Thunderbolts, Final Destination Bloodlines, Karate Kid: Legends, F1, Superman, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, From The World Of John Wick: Ballerina, etc.
