Spider-Man: Brand New Day may be introducing a brand new villain! A rumor suggests that the rogues gallery for the upcoming film will lean heavily into Japanese aesthetics.
The rumor mill has been hot and heavy in recent months as pre-production for Spider-Man: Brand New Day officially ramps up. The have been a cavalcade of reports about who the villain for the film will be, though the sheer bevvy of options suggests that Spider-Man may be facing off a large roster of baddies in the upcoming film.
A recent rumor from Alex Perez at The Cosmic Circus provides the most concrete details yet about the costumes that a certain villain will wear. Specifically, the scooper revealed details about two characters in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The first revolves around research into “Japanese Shinobi and Samurai” armor pieces. The second, and perhaps more interesting, revolves around a “dark female villain” with modernized tech wear mixed with traditional Japanese garb.
“This character also has a Japanese-inspired look. The main detail of the outfit involves a black kimono-style vest…However, the design is also modernized, featuring modern aesthetics that look like something out of a Cyberpunk fashion show. Lots of use of techwear & unconventional belt designs.”
“The best way to picture it, according to one source, would be to visualize Obi-Wan Kenobi’s costume from Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith from the belt portion up; however, it’s all black (and there are alternating designs between sleeveless and with sleeves).”
“Meanwhile, the bottom portion has techwear pants and a futuristic design. ‘It looks like a Star Wars character’, says one source. What’s more interesting is that this character carries a katana with her.”
Who Is The Villain Of Spider-Man: Brand New Day?
Many have been quick to draw this description back to longtime Spider-Man villain Mister Negative. However, that character is Chinese, whereas this rumor for Spider-Man: Brand New Day puts a large amount of focus on the costume being Japanese in nature. This makes things much harder, as Spider-Man doesn’t have too many female villains, let alone ones leaning so heavily into Japanese culture. However, it’s possible that the character isn’t a Spider-Man villain at all. Rather, a Daredevil villain: Lady Bullseye.

Lady Bullseye checks off all the boxes described in the rumor. Japanese inspired clothing, often wields weapons like a Katana, even the tech wear and belts can be explained by her having a number of items to throw on her person. The villain also lines up with the tastes of Destin Daniel Cretton, who serves as the director for Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
