In a major development, a Bengaluru civil court has passed an interim order against Tamil superstar Kamal Haasan, restricting him from making or publishing any statements that claim linguistic superiority over the Kannada language or that may hurt the sentiments of Kannadigas.
Bengaluru Court restrains Kamal Haasan from making remarks about Kannada language
The City Civil and Sessions Court Judge Madhu N R passed this order on Friday after hearing a suit filed by the Kannada Sahitya Parishat and its President, Nadoja Dr. Mahesh Joshi. The court, through its interim injunction, has barred Kamal Haasan and anyone associated with him from making, writing, or publishing any statements that claim linguistic superiority over Kannada. The order also restricts him from issuing any remarks that could hurt the sentiments of Kannadigas or defame the Kannada language, literature, land, or culture. This restriction will remain in effect until the next hearing.
The case was filed in response to a controversial statement allegedly made by Kamal Haasan, where he claimed that “Kannada was born out of Tamil” during a promotional event of Thug Life as he was addressing the audience along with Kannada superstar Shiva Rajkumar.
According to the complaint, this statement deeply hurt the feelings of Kannada-speaking people and was viewed as defamatory towards the Kannada language, literature, culture, and the pride of Kannadigas. The petitioners also pointed out the timing of the statement, questioning why Haasan made such a remark just days before filing his Rajya Sabha nomination for the DMK party.
The complainants further argued that even though the controversy surrounding the screening and release of Kamal Haasan’s movie Thug Life was settled by the Supreme Court of India, his alleged statement about Kannada continues to hurt the community’s sentiments.
The court also directed the Kannada Sahitya Parishat to publish a public notice as per legal procedure since the case has been filed on behalf of Kannadigas in general. The case will continue for further hearings, details of which remain under wraps.
As for the impact on the release of Thug Life, the film hit cinemas in multiple languages in June, but the release of its Kannada dubbed version was boycotted after Kamal’s comments.
