Is Superman getting darker than dark? David Corenswet reveals his desire to star in an R-Rated DC Universe project as the beloved Man of Steel.
One of the biggest things people have been praising David Corenswet’s performance in Superman for, even before it comes out, is that it feels like his hero is truly for the kids. Coming off the tails of a DC Universe that tried its best to be adult to differentiate itself from Marvel, it’s refreshing to see an actor truly embrace the comic book whimsy that sits at the core of their character.
However, it seems that David Corenswet has ambitions to branch out a bit from the kid-friendly persona. The actor recently sat down with Nerdist to help promote the upcoming Superman film. During the chat, Corenswet dropped that he thinks it would be interested to do an R-Rated project as the Man of Steel, even if it might not be as bloody as some people might assume at first blush.
“One thing that excites me so much about James [Gunn’s] vision for the DCU is the different genres and tones that the movies can take on. I know that people are skeptical that certain genres and characters can mix.”
“I would love to see this Superman in an R-rated project. In a detective- in a thing like Lanterns where it’s that True Detective feel. In spite of how bright and playful this version is, I think there’s room to be flexible. So I’d be very excited to see that.”
Is An R-Rated Superman Project On The Horizon?
While it doesn’t seem as though David Corenswet wants his version of Superman to be killing people like an executioner, it’s interesting to hear his thoughts on a more serious take on the Man of Steel. Zack Snyder certainly proved it could work during his tenure at the DC Universe, even if it didn’t connect with all fans. So the market space does certainly exist.
As for what an R-Rated Superman film would look like in the current DC Universe, it would probably be an adaptation of Superman and the Authority comic. It could also adapt the Warworld comic from around the same time, both of which focus on a much more world-weary Superman. Though given how young David Corenswet is, those may not come for quite some time!
Superman is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
