Theatres in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana may face a shutdown starting June 1 if exhibitors and producers fail to reach a consensus soon amid ongoing issues between both parties. A CinemaExpress report stated that around 60 exhibitors met with Telugu film producers like Dil Raju and Suresh Babu on Sunday to discuss long-standing issues surrounding the current rental-based revenue model.

A joint meeting was held in Hyderabad on Sunday between the exhibitor association and some big names from the film industry. The exhibitors pushed for a percentage-based revenue model and called for a bandh in the Telugu states from June 1 until the issue is resolved. Concerns were also raised regarding films releasing on OTT platforms shortly after their theatrical runs. A request was made to withhold the digital release of films for a longer period to support the theatrical business.

The report mentions that several key distributors and producers did not attend the meeting, suggesting an internal disagreement over the proposal. A formal representation will be submitted to the Film Chamber for further discussions ahead of the June 1 deadline. However, if the associations fail to reach a consensus, some major summer releases in the pipeline could be impacted. Only multiplexes not associated with the exhibitors’ association will continue to screen films.

Mani Ratnam’s Thug Life, starring Kamal Haasan, Silambarasan TR, and Trisha Krishnan, is slated for release on June 5. The film will be released in the Telugu states in both Tamil and a dubbed Telugu version. Meanwhile, Krish and Jyothi Krishna’s Hari Hara Veera Mallu: Part 1, starring Pawan Kalyan, Bobby Deol, and Nidhhi Agerwal, is now scheduled for release on June 12, after being postponed from its initial May 30 release date.

Should the bandh continue, Sekhar Kammula’s Kuberaa, starring Dhanush, Nagarjuna, Rashmika Mandanna, and Jim Sarbh, which is scheduled for release on June 20, could also be affected. Additionally, Mukesh Kumar Singh’s Kannappa, starring Vishnu Manchu and featuring cameos from Akshay Kumar, Prabhas, Mohanlal, and others, is set to release on June 27 and may also face delays if the issue is not resolved.
