Anthony Carrigan Wants To ‘Honor’ Metamorpho With His Role In ‘Superman’

Is Metamorpho the key to the DC Universe? Anthony Carrigan gives fans their first details about his upcoming role in the Superman reboot.

The rollout of the Superman cast was one of the most exciting times in the history of the DC Universe. While almost every actor was picture-perfect for the role they were playing, no announcement got fans more hype than the reveal that Anthony Carrigan would be playing Metamorpho. Not only was it a character fans have been begging to see on the silver screen for years, but he was going to be played by a three-time Emmy-nominated actor.

Anthony Carrigan seems to understand just how excited fans are for him to play Metamorpho. During a recent appearance on the DC Studios Showcase podcast, the actor explained that he felt a pressure in taking on the role in Superman. However, he hopes to do the character justice in bringing him to life in the new DC Universe.

“I did feel this weight. The real ones knew that this character is incredible. So I knew that there was a big responsibility to come in and do something that really honors this character. That lights a fire in me. I don’t back down from a challenge, and I really want to honor the source material but also bring my own spin to it. So hopefully people like it.”

Anthony Carrigan Breaks Down Metamorpho

Metamorpho is certainly a complicated character to get a grasp one, both literally and figuratively, due to how sporadic his appearances have been across the DC Universe. Any given actor can read the character any number of ways. Yet when continuing to speak on his role in Superman, it seems as though Anthony Carrigan is leaning into the much more reluctant takes on the character.

“It’s incredible. Just to know that they’re just getting little glimpses, I love that. It’s just the tip of the iceberg. There’s so much more that I get to do in this movie and it’s such fun stuff. Just to kind of tease it out little by little is my favorite.

“It was really important to me, and I think it was also one of the reasons that James [Gunn] hired me, is because this character in particular has this real kind of pathos to him. Unlike a lot of superheroes, he’s not crazy about the fact that he’s a superhero, right? He feels cursed by what he has. And so I really kind of bring something to that. And it really lit a fire.”

Given how little fans have seen of Metamorpho in the footage shown of Superman, it’s still unclear what exactly how role will be in the film. It’s possible that Anthony Carrigan plays a small role and doesn’t break into being as hero until the third act. It’s also possible that he’s a hero throughout, but his reluctance makes him temporarily turn away from the righteous path.

Superman is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
