Nearly six years after taking on the mantle, Anthony Mackie is finally set to make his big screen debut as Captain America in the upcoming Brave New World. While the film has been plagued with a number of controversies, fans are finally excited to see Sam Wilson take up the shield in one of the MCU’s tentpole blockbusters of 2025.
However, given how long the project has taken to materialize, fans have begun to worry about how long Anthony Mackie truly has in the role. Chris Evans only played the role of Captain America for eight years, and Mackie already ate through most of that time waiting for his first film. This doesn’t even count the five years before that where Sam Wilson was Falcon in the MCU.
Anthony Mackie Reveals His Timeline For Captain America
Anthony Mackie was asked about his concern directly in a recent chat with ScreenRant. The actor was surprisingly candid when speaking on his shelf life as Captain America. As he puts it, his countdown timer starts the second that Captain America: Brave New World releases on February 14th. From that day, Marvel has ten years to put Sam Wilson in as much as they can as Captain America before he puts down the shield for good.
“No, no, no. The 10 years start on the 14th. That’s it. After the 14th I got a 10-year run. I’m not trying to be a 60-year-old Captain America. That’ll hurt.”
It’s clear that Anthony Mackie has a great amount of care for the mantle of Captain America if he’s putting his time in the MCU on a ticking clock. If he runs his full tenure, that means that Mackie will have spent 21 years playing Sam Wilson on the silver screen by the time that he’s done. It’s a truly gigantic ask for an actor to play the same character for that long. Luckily for fans, Mackie seems more than ready for the task.
