Captain America reunites with Captain America! Anthony Mackie marks his return in Avengers: Doomsday as new details emerge about Chris Evans’ role in the film.
Captain America fans have been eating well the past few days. The internet collectively lost their minds when it was revealed that Chris Evans would be making his grand return to the MCU in Avengers: Doomsday. However, what many people didn’t notice was that in the same Deadline report confirming Evans’ return, Anthony Mackie was also stated to be making an appearance as the Star Spangled Man in the upcoming project.
This marks the first time Anthony Mackie and Chris Evans will share the screen since the mantle of Captain America was passed down in Avengers: Endgame. Seeing how the two will interact in Avengers: Doomsday is certainly an exciting prospect, especially given the many adventures that Mackie has been on in the MCU since Evans’ departure back in 2019. Yet their interactions may not be how many expect.
What Is Chris Evans’ Role In Avengers: Doomsday?
Given Avengers: Doomsday is set to cap off the multiverse saga, many assumed that they’d be able to see Anthony Mackie interact with a version of Chris Evans’ Captain America from another universe. Yet the answer may be a lot simpler than fans are giving the film credit for. In the same Deadline report, it was seemingly confirmed that Evans himself won’t be suiting up as Captain America.
“Evans in the Captain America costume seems less likely,” The outlet wrote. “However, it wouldn’t be a shock if he reprises Steve Rogers.”
While this appears to be speculation by Deadline, and not a hard scoop about the plot of Avengers: Doomsday, it certainly lines up with the current state of the MCU. Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers is geriatric in the current timeline, making a proper team-up with Anthony Mackie’s hero unlikely. Though given Rogers is still alive, it would make more sense to see him serve as an older advisor to Sam Wilson in leading a new Avengers team as Captain America.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters in May 2026. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
