‘Avengers: Doomsday’ To Feature Captain America Star Chris Evans

Avengers: Doomsday is bringing Chris Evans out of his Marvel retirement.

TheWrap reports that Chris Evans is set to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Avengers: Doomsday, marking his first appearance in the franchise since 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Having played Captain America in eleven Marvel movies, Evans remains one of the franchise’s most iconic figures. However, the actor’s role in Doomsday remains unclear, especially given the film’s multiverse ties.

Avengers: Doomsday is expected to bring together a mix of new and returning heroes as they face their greatest challenge yet: Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. With Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson now wielding the shield as the new Captain America, Evans’ involvement raises questions about how the two characters will interact — or if Rogers’ appearance will be tied to a multiverse twist.

What we know about Avengers: Doomsday

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Doomsday is one of two back-to-back Avengers films set to close out the current saga of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Avengers: Secret Wars following shortly after. Doomsday and Secret Wars are both being written by Stephen McFeely, who also worked on Avengers: Infinity War and its follow-up, Endgame.

Chris Evans surprised fans earlier this year by briefly returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Deadpool and Wolverine. However, instead of reprising his role as Steve Rogers, Evans appeared as Johnny Storm, the Human Torch, from Fox’s Fantastic Four films.

During San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel announced that Robert Downey Jr. would step into the role of Doctor Doom following the firing of Jonathan Majors, who was originally set to play Kang the Conqueror in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. After Majors’ departure, the film was reworked into Avengers: Doomsday, now featuring Doom as the central villain.
