It sounds like a lot went down leading up to the shocking breakup of Matt James and Rachael Kirkconnell!
On Thursday, the 33-year-old television personality announced they are no longer together after four years. The news caused jaws to drop in Bachelor Nation! No one saw the post coming — not even Rachael! The timing completely confused fans as he had posted a video from their trip to London on social media 12 hours before, leading to some wild conspiracy theories like someone hacked his account!

Some even thought Matt and Rachael did not break up but got engaged instead! The theory was that the post was supposed to mark the end of that chapter in their relationship before they stepped into their newly engaged one! What a cruel way to toy with fans’ emotions, if true.
However, the theories are wrong! They really did split! Rachael confirmed it! Now that the theories are out the window, people have questions about the breakup! What happened? When did it happen? What about those vacation posts from Matt? Sources have come forward to spill the tea – including someone very close to Rachael!
When TikToker Gabby White posted a video speculating about the breakup, Rachael’s sister Trinity Kirkconnell jumped in the comments to reveal the timeline of the breakup! According to the sibling, Matt and Rachael were still together when he posted the London videos! WHAT! She replied:
“Yea so they were still together when he was posting all that… just to give some perspective on the timeline of things.”
And get this! Trinity then claimed Matt uploaded the breakup post only THREE HOURS AFTER he and Rachael split! Check out her comments (below):
OMG! He didn’t even give Rachael a chance to process what happened! What a jerk! But what the heck happened that caused them to go their separate ways so suddenly? Trinity did not say. However, multiple sources have said it comes down to one thing: Matt and Rachael were not on the same page about an engagement!
Fans know a lot of people were rooting for these two to walk down the aisle someday – even after the whole racism controversy. On every video or picture they posted together, people asked when a proposal was coming. Matt seemed to want to marry Rachael! That said, the pressure from fans made him hesitate to pop the question. He explained to Us Weekly last June:
“We’re doing great. I feel like when you feel pressure, it’s when you don’t wanna do something. So I’ve never really felt pressure [to get engaged] because it’s something that I’ve always wanted to do. It’s something that we’re gonna do at some point. That’s why we’re together and what we’re working toward. I’m excited about our future.”
For her part, Rachael would joke about it. A few weeks ago, she quipped to someone that she would get down on one knee and propose to Matt “next Thursday.” However, it soon became not a joking matter to her. She wanted to get engaged and was tired of waiting for him to step up!
According to a source for The Sun on Friday, Rachael even gave him an ultimatum: Propose to her by the end of 2024 or they are over! And guess what? He didn’t propose, so she later dumped him. Wow. The insider said:
“Rachael is the one who pulled the plug, full stop. Matt knows what he did but that’s Rachael’s story to tell.”
“Matt knows what he did”?? It sounds like a lot more happened that just him not proposing! Like, did he do something wrong? The source continued:
“I will say this, he wouldn’t commit. She basically gave him an ultimatum to propose by the end of 2024 and that didn’t happen. Years of dragging her along. She tried and tried. It’s been really hard on her, she really cared and thought this was going to work. I really don’t think she thought he’d still be dragging his feet all these years later.”
Neither did we…
A source for Us Weekly basically said the same thing, too! This breakup has been a long time coming, all because Matt couldn’t give her what she needed in the relationship — commitment:
“The split may seem abrupt, but this has been brewing for a while. It was a long time coming. Matt just couldn’t commit to her.”
The lack of engagement was not the only problem! They also battled trust issues! The insider claimed that “it was hard for Rachael to trust him,” adding:
“Rachael really wanted to get married and settle down and they were not on the same page. She felt like she was waiting around, and he would never give her what she wanted.”
Oof.
Right now, the source said “they are both very upset” over the split. However, Rachael is “ready to move on” and knows “it’s for the best.” If she can’t “trust” him and they aren’t in agreement about getting engaged, we hate to say it, but it is probably for the best that they went their separate ways. We do wish he had handled the breakup better, though. You know, he could have waited at least 24 hours – and not blindside her by announcing it three hours after it happened!
