Benedict Cumberbatch Confirms MCU Return As Doctor Strange In ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

The Doctor is in! Benedict Cumberbatch reveals he’ll officially be making his return to the MCU as Doctor Strange in Avengers: Doomsday.

With production on Avengers: Doomsday only a few months away, news has started to trickle out about which of the MCU’s biggest stars will be making their return in the project. Just the other day it was confirmed that both Chris Evans and Anthony Mackie have officially joined the cast of the highly anticipated sequel. Now hot off the heels of that reveal, it’s been confirmed that Benedict Cumberbatch will reprise his role as the (former) Sorcerer Supreme Doctor Strange.

Benedict Cumberbatch publicly confirmed his involvement with Avengers: Doomsday in a chat with TVGroove at Tokyo Comic Convention 2024. The MCU star revealed his excitement to reunite with the Russo Brothers on a new project, as well as see Robert Downey Jr. take on the role of Doctor Doom. While he didn’t reveal any details about Doctor Strange’s role in the project, he did tease that some big things may be in store of the film.

“I’m really excited not only to work with the Russo brothers again, but also to have Robert Downey Jr. returning as Doctor Doom. I think there’s going to be some really cool developments ahead, and I’m excited to see what happens next. “

Doctor Strange’s Future In The MCU

Yet it seems Benedict Cumberbatch isn’t ready to hang up his Cloak of Levitation just yet. Continuing his media circuit at the Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea Film Festival, the MCU star revealed that he thinks Doctor Strange has plenty of gas left in the tank for interesting stories, specifically citing the ever changing universe that may be massively impacted by the events of Avengers: Doomsday.

“He’s a swat. He’s an academic,” Cumberbatch explained in a talk transcribed by Deadline. “He’s just got a really fierce brain, but he is motivated by needing to control certain things at any cost, and that always comes at a cost. So, I’m interested to see what those costs continue to be, how it wears on him and how he needs to adapt to keep evolving and be what he needs to be in that universe, and how it affects him. There’s a lot more to play with. It is very exciting.”

For a while, many fans believed that Benedict Cumberbatch would take center stage as the face of the MCU following Robert Downey Jr.’s departure. Sadly, his return of Doctor Strange in Avengers: Doomsday comes off the heels of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness being one of the most controversial projects in MCU history. While there’s no telling what the future holds for his role as the Sorcerer Supreme, it’s likely his return in the blockbuster will give some indication of the studio’s intentions for his hero going forward.

Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters in May 2026. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
