‘Black Panther’ Spin-Off Series About Danai Gurira’s Okoye Cancelled At Marvel Studios

]

Black Panther fans may have to wait a bit longer for Danai Gurira to return! Marvel Studios has confirmed that the Okoye Disney Plus series has been cancelled.

The years after Avengers: Endgame were a weird time for Marvel Studios. The studio seemed to be throwing every IP in their bag at Disney Plus to see if any series would stick and make Disney a dominant player in the streaming game. While some of the projects like Armor Wars were highly celebrated in their time, others like I Am Groot and a Black Panther spin-off based on Danai Gurira’s Okoye were met with plenty of skepticism.

However, in the years since, Marvel Studios’ slate on Disney Plus has shifted drastically. Complete unknown projects like Agatha All Along were smash hits, while others like Armor Wars were left on the cutting room floor. This left the Okoye series in an odd position. No news has ever been revealed about the project besides confirmation of its development, even odder as the Black Panther spin-off Eyes of Wakanda has been chugging along with production.

Is The Okoye Series Cancelled?

The first bit of news on the Black Panther spin-off came recently when Marvel Studios producer Brad Winderbaum spoke to the Youtube channel Pay or Wait. Spoiler alert: the news wasn’t good. While the producer strayed away from saying that it was specifically cancelled, he did say that fans shouldn’t expect Danai Gurira to return as Okoye in a Disney Plus series anytime soon.

“I think fans of Okoye are going to be excited to see her come back,” The producer explained “But I don’t think it’s going to be in a television show. I can’t say where and when, but I think there’s a lot to look forward to.”

Given Marvel Studios is tightening its belt when it comes to its offerings on Disney Plus, it makes sense that the Okoye spin-off would be one of the first on the cutting room floor. The Black Panther series is already facing uncertain waters as rumors swell about T’Challa being recast. It’s likely that the studio is waiting for the future to be clear before greenlighting any expansions to that corner of the universe.
