Born Again’ Cut Episode Count By Half

Is Daredevil: Born Again too short? A producer for Marvel’s television division breaks his silence about the ever-shrinking episode count.

Fans were over the moon when Daredevil: Born Again was first announced. The Disney Plus revival of the series was set to have 18 episodes, more than any individual season of the original Netflix series. It was slightly disheartening when it was announced that would be split across two seasons, but nine episodes certainly isn’t a bad run.

However, the most recent episode count has begun to worry fans. It has been confirmed that Daredevil: Born Again will in fact have nine episodes, but those will be split across two seasons, with the first getting the lion’s share with six episodes. While it’s almost certain season 2 of the series will get more episodes down the line, fans have been left wondering what happened to those now lost episodes.

Why Is Daredevil: Born Again Only Six Episodes?

Brad Winderbaum, who serves as Marvel’s head of streaming, television and animation, recently sat down with the Phase Hero podcast to talk about a number of upcoming projects. When asked why Daredevil: Born Again‘s episode count had seemingly suffered a Thanos snapping, Winderbaum admitted that the strikes allowed them to refine the series and cut out all of the fluff.

“Our first conceit for Daredevil was let’s try a longer format,” Winderbaum explained. “Let’s take this character and this world of New York City and build an ensemble. Then we learned a lot of lessons doing it that way. So, because of a number of reasons, including the shutdowns due to the strikes, we were able to reassess the episodes and see what we had. It’s just the best nine episodes. It feels like it is a great kind of first season.”

It’s certainly commendable to try to make the tightest and best project out of respect for the audience’s time. However, often times the “fluff” cut from shows ends up being key to world building, even if not key to the narrative. And with shows ever-decreasing in episode count, thus decreasing their cultural footprint, it’s unclear if Daredevil: Born Again will overcome the odds to become something truly enduring, or just yet another flash in the pan in the current streaming landscape.

Daredevil: Born Again will release in March 4, 2025 on Disney Plus. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
