A lot of time has passed since the Netflix days! Wilson Bethel reveals how long the gap will be between Daredevil: Born Again and the original series.
Perhaps no show’s fandom breathed a bigger sigh of relief than when fans found out that Daredevil: Born Again would be a direct continuation of the Netflix series. When the show was first announced for Disney Plus, the attitude seemed to be that the project would be a “soft reboot” of the character and his stories. But following a creative overhaul and a new set of showrunners, the show’s past seasons became fully canon to the MCU, warts and all.
However, this left fans with one lingering question. Daredevil: Born Again releases nearly seven years after the Netflix series was taken off the air. With such a long gap, and so many big events in the MCU, nobody truly knew how the Disney Plus show would address the time that had gone by. Some even assumed that the project would act like no time at all had passed since season 3 to try to keep continuity somewhat intact!
Daredevil: Born Again’s Massive Time Skip
The answer to this query came from Wilson Bethel, the actor who played Bullseye in the Netflix series, during a recent appearance at Fan Expo San Francisco (via Collider). When speaking on his role in Daredevil: Born Again, Bethel revealed that it was impossible to completely ignore the time that had passed during the show’s cancellation, leading to there being a five year time jump between the end of season 3 and the revival.
“Yeah, I mean, Charlie sort of alluded to it. But I think one of the things that’s interesting is, I mean, maybe it’s different on a sitcom or something like that, but if you’re on a show for over a period of time and the characters are aging together sort of in real-time, and if the show is well written and the writers are sort of responding to that reality transpiring, the wrinkles of their hair, et cetera, then in theory, the character is evolving in a way, whether or not the show was on air.”
“So there’s kind of like this funny thing stepping back after five years where Born Again will pick up with that amount of time having transpired. The show doesn’t pick up the day after we last saw it. It picks up five years later. And so in theory, these are characters who have all lived five years of life and all of the twists and turns that you take in the meantime.”
“So whether or not even those stories are necessarily on screen, there’s just that little extra bit of life in there, which I think is… as an actor, it gives you an opportunity to bring whatever your own journey has been in that time and they get sort of a little longer in the tooth.”
Five years is a very interesting amount of time for Wilson Bethel to say. While the Netflix series was cancelled in 2018, the MCU is actually five years ahead of the current day following Thanos’ iconic snap. This either means that season 3 of the original show took place in our relative future from when it released, or Daredevil: Born Again picks up almost immediately after the Avengers’ victory in the MCU. Then again, it could also be that the exact number of years wasn’t clear when Bethel was filming his scenes for the show.
Daredevil: Born Again will release in March 4, 2025 on Disney Plus. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
