Was Daredevil: Born Again on the verge of ruination? Vincent D’Onofrio speaks out on the recent claim that the series was originally shot as a comedy.
There’s a lot of controversy surrounding Daredevil: Born Again. This not only because the revival is set to bring back one of the most beloved superhero shows of all time with a new showrunner on a new streamer with new rules, but because almost the entire series underwent an extensive overhaul and reshoots back in in 2023. This left many to worry what the original vision for the project was like, and how much of it would remain in the now-shortened first season.
Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld spoke on these worries with a recent post of his own on social media. According to the writer, the first drafts of Daredevil: Born Again were framed as a comedy. However, following Marvel bringing in stunt coordinator Phil Silvera, most of the series was reportedly “reshot” to add in more action. According to Liefeld, the final product exceeds expectations.
“Prior to the Marvel Brass finally listening to the talent, [Daredevil: Born Again] was a comedy! They brought in action impression Phil Silvera who literally reshot most every episode. The action and stunts are next level!”
Vincent D’Onofrio Speaks On Comedy Claims
However, it seems as though not everyone involved with Daredevil: Born Again agrees with Rob Liefeld’s characterization of the project. Vincent D’Onofrio responded with his own social media post claiming that, while Phil Silvera did bring quite a bit of his stunt proficiency to the series, he far from reworked the project. Rather, the tone of the revival was achieved through talent like himself and Charlie Cox coordinating with producers and showrunner Dario Scardapane.
“Phil [Silvera] was hired again for the stunts that’s true. Yet the new episodes even the action scenes were written by Dario our showrunner. Phil came in with his expertise and coordinated the stunts. It was a wonderful restart and we all worked really hard for the fans. Charlie, myself and Dario our producers and studio heads felt like we knew what the fans wanted. That was our goal.”
Given how all-encompassing the creative overhaul of Daredevil: Born Again was, it’s unlikely fans will ever know exactly how much was changed from the first draft to now. Though given what fans know about the original incarnation, with it apparently focusing much more on Matt Murdock’s life as a lawyer than his time as Daredevil, it’s understandable Rob Liefeld may have viewed that as a comedy when compared to the current iteration described by Vincent D’Onofrio and the rest of the cast.
