This is so disturbing!
After murdering Gabby Petito, Brian Laundrie used her phone to keep text conversations going between them so he’d have an alibi!
As Perezcious readers know, the 22-year-old #vanlife influencer was road-tripping with her fiancé in 2021 when she suddenly went missing. He returned home without her, refused to talk with police, and quickly disappeared himself. He was later found dead by suicide and was determined to have killed his partner.

In Netflix‘s new docuseries American Murder: Gabby Petito out on Monday, investigators found text messages between Gabby and Brian — sent AFTER her death!
A key point: the last known day Gabby was alive was on August 27, 2021. Just one day later, on August 28, per the documentary, Brian hiked from Gabby’s last known location in Grand Teton National Park to a new area of the park. The next day, he had several conversations with his parents, who were also in touch with a lawyer.
Info from the phone company showed that amid Brian’s hike, he was texting Gabby, saying:
“Hey Hunny, just calling to let you know I made it to Colter Bay! I think the campground is still a little ways up the road, I’m gonna go check it out! LMK when your on your way, no rush:)”
He followed up saying there was “no rush” for her to join him, adding:
“Still no rush, just wanted to say I’m sitting in front of the visitor center now. Can’t wait for you to see the mountains across the water! Wish you could fly the drone here:)”
In the evening of the 29th, he caught two rides from the camping area back to the Spread Creek area where he’d left Gabby’s van… and her phone. He texted her once again:
“I’m surprised your even getting my txts. And do you think you could pick me up tomorrow instead of Monday. I don’t think I can do two more nights:(“
Here’s the thing, though. She wasn’t actually getting his texts. It was ONLY once he arrived back to Spread Creek — where her phone was — that his texts to Gabby were read and responded to. A message from her phone to Brian stated:
“Yeah sure baby, we’ll do one more night of dispersed and then we’ve got our site at Colter Bay for TWO NIGHTS!!”
He replied:
“I love you hunny, see you tomorrow
“
FBI Special Agent Loretta Bush broke down just why this is so suspicious, saying:
“The activity between the two phones was almost instantaneous. Brian was holding both phones and talking directly to himself. It was apparent that he was trying to create an alibi.”
Jeez!
On August 30, Brian then started his trek home to Florida in the van (which she was the sole owner of), and he used Gabby’s debit card to pay for gas on the way!
He also texted Gabby’s mother Nichole Schmidt — from Gabby’s phone — asking for Nichole to contact her grandfather, who had been trying to get in contact with her. But he made a little mistake — he called the grandfather “Stan” rather than “Grandpa,” something that raised red flags for the mother.
During his drive, Brian also sent himself a $700 Zelle payment from Gabby’s account with the note:
“Goodbye Brian, I’ll never ask you for anything again.”
WTF.
He was gonna try to pretend they broke up?? So, so diabolical.
It was later determined Brian killed Gabby by manual strangulation and blunt-force trauma to her head and neck. When Brian was found dead, there was a waterproof bag with a notebook inside near him, in which he claimed Gabby had been injured during a hike and begged “for an end to her pain,” he claimed, “I ended her life.” But her stepfather Jim Schmidt insisted:
“Not one of the versions of Brian’s account was accurate by the findings of Gabby’s autopsy. The sole cause of her death was strangulation and nothing remotely or even close to what he said.”
These texts certainly show he was working hard to cover his actions up. Awful.
