Was Brainiac the next big bad of Superman and Lois? Michael Cudlitz reveals what the next villain would have been if the series wasn’t cancelled.
While much of DC’s brand identity in the past decade has come more from what has been cancelled than what has actually been made, there’s perhaps no series less deserving of its fate than Superman and Lois. The project was one of the most beloved in the network’s catalogue, only getting stronger via the addition of actors like Michael Cudlitz.
Sadly, the series was ultimately cut short and cancelled due to a combination of studio politics and a new direction of the DC Universe. Despite this, members of the cast and crew have been very open that there were bigger plans in store for Superman and Lois. Though given the recent cancellation of the project, they’ve been mostly tightlipped regarding the specifics of any storyline.
Was Brainiac Planned For Superman And Lois?
The first concrete information that’s been revealed about the cancelled plans for future seasons of Superman and Lois actually comes from Michael Cudlitz, who played Lex Luthor in the final seasons of the series. When speaking at Fan Expo Philadelphia, the actor remarked that the next villain planned for the series was actually Brainiac, even if he declined to go into specifics.
“From what I remember, it involved Brainiac,” Cudlitz remarked when asked about any scrapped plans for the series. “They were going to definitely go into the world of Brainiac.”
Given the final season of Superman and Lois featured the Milton Fine incarnation of Brainiac in a minor role, it’s more likely than not that it would be that version of the character taking a leading role. Then again, given the abridged nature of the series’ final season, it’s possible that the original plans for the character were changed prior to the project being cancelled to avoid any potential loose ends.
Season 4 of Superman and Lois is now streaming on the CW Network. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
