Max has officially renewed Creature Commandos for a second season, expanding the foundation of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe. The renewal comes as the seven-episode first season continues to air, with the series debuting on December 5 as the first title in the interconnected DC Universe continuity.
Created by Gunn and produced by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation, Creature Commandos is the first animated series under the new DC Universe umbrella. Dean Lorey, known for his work on Harley Quinn, serves as the showrunner for the series. While Superman is set to carry the continuity forward on the big screen in Summer 2025, HBO’s The Penguin operates under the “Elseworlds” label, reserved for projects outside Gunn and Safran’s main DCU continuity.

In a statement, Gunn and Safran expressed their excitement for the continuation: “We’re thrilled to team up with Max for another season of Creature Commandos mayhem. From our spectacular first season of Peacemaker to the astonishing run of The Penguin to the record-breaking launch of Creature Commandos, Max has consistently delivered above industry expectations and beyond our wildest imaginings. Thank you, Casey, Sarah, Pia, Sono and the entire team for your tremendous support of DC Studios. We are proud to call Max home.”
Amy Gravitt, vice president of HBO and Max comedy programming, added, “Only James Gunn could have conjured this wild band of misfit monsters who tug at your heart and force you to root passionately for them. We couldn’t be more delighted to continue their stories with James, Dean Lorey, Peter Safran and our fantastic partners at DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation.”
Creature Commandos is an adult animated series from DC Studios that follows a team of misfit monsters and unconventional heroes assembled for high-stakes missions. Inspired by the original comic series, the series features characters like Rick Flag Sr, Weasel, and Frankenstein.
“Thanks to the brilliant imagination of James and the talent of our amazing artists, DC fans fell in love with this new family of heroes,” said Peter Girardi, executive vp alternative programming at Warner Bros. Animation. “We are excited to continue this wild ride with our partners at Max. You want more monsters, you’re getting more monsters.”
Last week, DC Studios launched the first trailer for Superman, which quickly broke records with its massive viewership. The trailer offered fans their first look at David Corenswet as the iconic superhero ahead of the movie’s debut in 2025.
