Has Dakota Johnson been dropping hints about her latest (and likely “final”) split with Chris Martin?
On Wednesday, several sources confirmed to People the engaged couple called it quits… again. While Dakota and Chris tend to break up and get back together, things are different this time around! One source seems pretty positive they are over for good! Whoa!
It’s unknown why the duo ended their relationship. However, the actress made some cryptic comments about divorce and marriage in a joint interview with her Materialists director, Celine Song, for the Los Angeles Times. The interview happened to drop the same day the breakup news broke — and with that context, it does seem like she was hinting at her own relationship troubles.

When asked about what made her upcoming rom-com different from others she’d seen (or starred in), Dakota replied:
“The complexities of all of the characters. The paradox. Everyone being confused about what the f**k they’re supposed to do with their hearts. And what’s the right move? I found that very honest and I found it just so relatable.”
Hmm. We bet Dakota knows all about questioning what to do in a relationship, especially when she was with Chris! They were in an on-and-off cycle for almost eight years!
Based on what we’ve heard, it seems the on-off thing was likely Dakota deciding whether to leave him for good! The two reportedly were in an open relationship when they were together — something the Fifty Shades of Grey alum was “less than thrilled about” but went along with anyway! Ouch! It doesn’t get more complicated and confusing than that!
With that messiness in mind, read what Dakota told the interviewer next:
“For a long time we’ve all been so quick to judge relationships or how they should happen, how they should exist in the world. When people should get married. Divorce is bad. All these things that actually, if you think about it, why is divorce bad? Why do people have to get married or at a certain age or only once? Why? It doesn’t matter.”
Reading between the lines, it sounds like Dakota is pretty happy with her decision to leave! Right?? Considering it never sounded like the former lovebirds were on the same page, this is probably the healthiest thing…
