Is Dave Bautista on his way back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe? The Guardians of The Galaxy star reveals he’s open to return to the world of Marvel, just not as the beloved Drax the Destroyer.
Ever since the Guardians of the Galaxy series came to an end with Volume 3, fans have been keeping an eye on the cast to see if Marvel might bring back their beloved characters for other projects. Some like Chris Pratt are all but confirmed to return in future MCU films, while others like Karen Gillan keep their roles confined solely to the realm of animation. Though perhaps the most interesting member of the team to watch is Drax actor Dave Bautista.
Dave Bautista has been famously open about how willing he is to follow Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn over to the new DC Universe, which left fans worried that he may leave the Marvel Universe in his rearview mirror. Surprisingly though, the actor did reveal that he’s talked to certain directors about making his grand return to the MCU. There is one caveat, however: he doesn’t plan on playing Drax.
“But I do wanna be in that world,” Bautista explained to Comicbook.com “I’m a fan of that world, I’m a fan of comic books and that whole universe. Marvel, DC, I just wanna be in it. I made that known to James [Gunn], I made that known to the Russo brothers. Personally, I talked to them, all of them, and told them, ‘Don’t count me out. If there’s a character that I’d be right for and that you want me for, man, I’d be totally open-minded to it.’ It’s just the Drax character ran its course.”
Dave Bautista’s One Condition To Return As Drax
This news may be heartbreaking to those that fell in love with Dave Bautista through the near-decade long journey he took with Marvel in Guardians of the Galaxy. However, it seems that there is one path where Drax could make his return to the MCU. Bautista reveals that he’d be open to play the character again if James Gunn himself even made the call, though he personally doesn’t see that as likely given his current position at DC Studios.
“Drax is completely closed to me. Unless James Gunn called me and asked if I would do something as Drax again, I just wouldn’t be interested. If James called me, which obviously is not gonna happen. He’s doing okay, he’s gone a different route.”
Given how close the Guardians of the Galaxy cast was, it’s not shocking that Dave Bautista would bake in a special exception for James Gunn if he ever did return to the MCU. Though as he said, it’s not likely that Gunn would return to Marvel even if he wanted to given his vested stake at DC. So, as sad as it may be, the story of Drax may be over for good.
