Police have detained a Minnesota woman after the shocking shooting of multiple Democratic lawmakers.
On Saturday, Governor Tim Walz announced that Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette were “shot multiple times” and wounded in their Minnesota home shortly before state Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark were tragically shot and killed in theirs a few miles away. He revealed in a news conference the horrific act of violence “appears to be a politically motivated assassination.” While The Hortmans sadly did not make it, Walz revealed he is “cautiously optimistic [the Hoffmans] will survive this assassination attempt.”
Cops arrived at the home of the Hortmans at around 3:35 a.m. and encountered the suspect — dressed as a police officer — exiting the residence. Unfortunately, the shooter opened fire before escaping on foot, leaving behind a vehicle in the driveway containing a manifesto with several other names, including Walz, U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, U.S. Sen. Tina Smith, and state Attorney General Keith Ellison.
After assessing additional information in the vehicle, the Associated Press reported authorities are looking for 57-year-old Vance Boelter. And while he may still be at large, police have officially detained his wife.

Less than seven hours after he escaped, Jenny Boelter was detained along with three other family members during a traffic stop in Onamia at around 10:00 a.m. local time. Sources informed 5 Eyewitness News the vehicle contained a weapon, ammo, cash, and multiple passports. While Jenny Boelter was detained, no official arrests were made. At this time, it’s not clear whether it was a random traffic stop or if she was being tracked by law enforcement officers. Mille Lacs County Sheriff Kyle Burton told FOX 9 on Sunday:
“My office assisted law enforcement from Hennepin County on a stop near a convenience store in the city of Onamia. Our role on this stop was perimeter. We did not search or question any of the occupants. I was told by my staff who responded that the shooting suspect’s wife was in the car along with several other relatives.”
Vance Boelter has yet to be found, but on Sunday morning authorities announced they discovered a vehicle belonging to him in the Sibley County area — about 60 miles southwest of where the shootings occurred. Upon the discovery, an emergency alert was sent out warning residents to “Keep your doors locked and vehicles secured. Report suspicious activity to 911.”
The FBI is currently offering a $50,000 reward for any information that could help lead to Boelter’s arrest. FBI Minneapolis Special Agent in Charge Alvin M. Winston Sr. said in a release:
“This was a deliberate and violent attack on public servants and their families. We are working with our law enforcement partners and using every available resource to locate and apprehend Vance Boelter. We urge anyone with information to come forward—no detail is too small. The public’s vigilance is critical in bringing this individual to justice.”
