In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Kunaal Roy Kapur opened up about the impact of the 2013 blockbuster Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani on his career, the significance of his character, and the hilarious dance sequence that became one of the film’s highlights.

Reflecting on the film’s recent re-release and the sudden surge in his social media presence, Kunaal shared, “I have just 5,000 followers on Instagram, but after the re-release of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, I got millions of likes.”
Choosing impactful roles
Kunaal, known for his effortless comic timing, spoke about his character’s importance in shaping the film’s narrative. “The importance of my character is that he brings change in the thoughts of the lead character—what love and sacrifice mean.” He further explained his approach to choosing roles, emphasizing that he looks for characters who make an impact. “I look at a character who brings change in the story, who is not a main lead but has a great impact on the perspective.”
Iconic dance sequence
One of the most memorable moments in the film was the dance sequence featuring Kunaal’s character, which had audiences in splits. Talking about how it came to life, he recalled, “The big whole thing was the dance. I sat with Ayaan Mukherji as I needed to be funny. People should laugh at and with the character at the same time. People should like it and find it funny.”
The writer deserves the credit
Despite his performance being a fan favorite, Kunaal humbly credited the film’s writers for shaping his role. “The credit of raising this green flag character totally goes to the writer. I can’t create that character; it has to come from a writer.” The dance sequence had a personal connection for Kunaal, making it even more special. “As my mother is a dancer and the song was of my sister-in-law Vidya Balan, it was a dance murder on the floor, and it was a whole family discussion.”
