The week gone by has been a historic one for Bollywood. Sanam Teri Kasam re-released and it has emerged as a huge hit. While it collected less than Rs. 10 crores in its original run in 2016, it is all set to cross the Rs. 30 crore mark in its repeat run, shocking the trade and industry as no other re-release has performed in this manner. A few days back, one of its directors, Vinay Sapru, of Radhika Rao-Vinay Sapru fame, revealed that they have begun work on the sequel and that it’ll be out on Valentine’s Day 2026. This claim by the director astonished Sanam Teri Kasam’s producer Deepak Mukut. He spoke exclusively to Bollywood Hungama about it.
EXCLUSIVE: Sanam Teri Kasam producer Deepak Mukut reacts SHARPLY to Radhika Rao-Vinay Sapru’s claims on making the sequel: “The rights belong to me; It is their duty to reach out to me, not the other way round, especially since they are giving interviews about making the sequel”
Deepak Mukut began by saying, “The IP of Sanam Teri Kasam belongs to me since I am its producer. So, the rights to make a sequel or even a prequel or a remake rests with me. In fact, I announced the sequel in September 2024 with Harshvardhan Rane in the lead.”
He added, “As for the directors (Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru), I haven’t had any discussion with them. They haven’t met and spoken to me about it. I have not finalized any director.”
So, who’ll direct the much-awaited sequel? Deepak Mukut said, “Woh koi bhi ho sakta hai. What matters is that the content should work and I won’t compromise on that aspect.”
When asked if he has reached out to Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru, he replied, “It is their duty to reach out to me rather than the other way round, especially since they are giving interviews about making the sequel. I just want to reiterate that the rights belong to me.”
Regarding the update on Sanam Teri Kasam 2, Deepak Mukut said, “The writing process is going on. Once it is complete, it’ll go on floors.” He also revealed, “We are looking for an ideal girl for the part. She should be a nice performer just like Mawra Hocane in the first part.”
Deepak Mukut hopes to bring the film exactly 365 days later, “We hope to release on Valentine’s Day. Since our first film got a lot of love on this day, we’d like to bring the sequel during this time.”
Harshvardhan Rane recently revealed that he’s going to drink only water for the next 11 days for the sake of the sequel. When this topic was brought up, Deepak Mukut smiled and said, “He’s very sweet. I made one more film with him, Taish (2020). So, we have a great bond and we are on the same wavelength. I advised him that acchi cheez karo. Kam kaam karoge toh use farak nahin padta hai. Lekin acchi cheezein karoge toh success milega hi nahin.”
Deepak Mukut took this opportunity to credit Sanam Teri Kasam’s music composer, “Himesh Reshammiya ji has given such soulful music to our film. We are thankful to him as his songs played an important role in its success.” Will Himesh be the composer of the second part? He said, “100% we want him to be a part of it. Who wouldn’t want him (smiles)?”
Despite the reservations over Vinay Sapru’s statement, Deepak Mukut spoke highly of him and Radhika Rao, “The directors also worked hard on the film. We didn’t compromise at all while making it. It was the film’s destiny that it didn’t work during its original run in the cinemas. My grandfather used to say, ‘Samay se pehle aur kismat se zyada kisi ko kuch nahin milta’!”
