Does the MCU already have their Mystique actress locked? Hunter Schafer gives her thoughts on the recent rumor she’ll be joining the X-Men.
The rumor mill has been absolutely flooded in recent months with reports of different actors joining the MCU as various X-Men. Perhaps the oldest and most well-known report revolves around Stranger Things star Sadie Sink playing Jean Grey in the upcoming reboot. However, some other stand-out rumors surrounding the cast include Wicked actress Cynthia Erivo as Storm and The Substance breakout Margaret Qualley as Rogue.
Though perhaps the rumor to catch the most eyes is the report that Euphoria star Hunter Schafer is being eyed to join the MCU as Mystique. Part of why this rumor blew up is because it gives fans their first hints at who the villain could be in the upcoming X-Men reboot. Additionally, Schafer would be the first transgender actress to play a hero in the MCU, as well as the third trans actor overall to appear in the universe after Zoe Terakes in Ironheart and Zach Barack in Spider-Man: Far From Home.
Will Hunter Schafer Play Mystique In The MCU?
This rumor actually made its way to Hunter Schafer herself during a recent award show. Entertainment Tonight asked her if she had seen fans casting her as Mystique in the MCU. It turns out, she had, and was surprisingly open to taking on the role of the X-Men’s second most iconic villain if Marvel ever approaches her for the opportunity.
“I did see them! My dad texted me about that, yeah,” Schafer explained. “Yeah, that would be cool. These fan casts come around every once in a while and it’s always very sweet and always for characters that I really like.”
Many fans may see this as confirmation that the rumor is false. However, Hunter Schafer would be far from the first actress to lie about their role in the MCU. Especially considering how closely Marvel is keeping details about the X-Men reboot to their chest, it’s likely anyone up for a role, be it Mystique or otherwise, is under some incredibly hefty NDAs preventing them from discussing the project.
