Jai Courtney Reveals He’s Spoken To James Gunn About A Return As Captain Boomerang In The DC Universe

]

Is Jai Courtney’s time as Captain Boomerang officially over? The actor reveals he’s spoken to James Gunn about making a return in the new DC Universe.

The old DC Universe didn’t have many good villains. It certainly had a handful of good movies, but many of the antagonists involved within were either hollow, underutilized, or just plain bad. One of the few exceptions is Jai Courtney, who played Captain Boomerang in both the original Suicide Squad as James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. He was often considered a diamond in the very, very rough.

Which is why so many people were stunned when, within the opening minutes of The Suicide Squad, James Gunn decided to kill off Jai Courtney’s character. This was a double shame because it came before Captain Boomerang had anything more than a 20 second interaction with his main adversary, The Flash, who had their own movie coming out not long after. Though given the state of the DC Universe, it was far from the biggest tragedy for fans to focus on.

Will Jai Courtney Return As Captain Boomerang?

There may be some hope yet for Captain Boomerang fans, however. In a recent chat with Variety, Jai Courtney briefly spoke on his time as the iconic DC Universe villain. He remarked that he spoke to James Gunn about potentially making his return as the character after reading about his death in The Suicide Squad‘s script. And it seems as though, at the time, the director was keeping an open mind to the possibility!

“I was like, ‘Come on, man. Boomerang is cool,’” Courtney told Variety “And James is like, ‘You know these rules don’t really apply. Just because he dies here doesn’t mean it’s gone forever, right?’ And I was like, ‘Hell yeah.’ So I have hope. Somewhere in the back of my mind, there’s a prayer that we’ll see more of Boomerang one day.”

Of course, James Gunn is in a very different position now than when he was directing The Suicide Squad. He’s responsible with charting a new course for the DC Universe, and the more actors he brings back, the harder it’ll be to differentiate the two different eras of the franchise. Though given how beloved Jai Courtney is as Captain Boomerang, it may be time for the villain to make his return!
