Is Clayface going to be the debut of the new Batman? James Gunn gives his thoughts on the DC Universe’s Caped Crusader making a cameo in the film.
The Batman situation in the DC Universe is a complicated one. Not because of the facts of the situation, but more-so because of how overcomplicated those online make it seem, with there being endless speculation about when James Gunn will reveal his new actor for the Dark Knight in a cameo or side project.
Perhaps the biggest candidate in many people’s minds of when they’ll get the first look at the DC Universe’s new Batman is in the upcoming Clayface movie, an R-Rated horror film centered around one of the Dark Detective’s most beloved foes. While most people don’t think he’ll play a major role in the film, some think that James Gunn greenlighting such an odd film so early is a sign that the character may at least make a small cameo.
Will Batman Be In The Clayface Movie?
James Gunn touched on this when asked about a tangential question on Threads, which is how most questions about the modern DC Universe are answered. The director was asked if the plan was still to introduce the new Batman actor in the Brave and the Bold solo film, to which he confirmed “Yes”. This seems to debunk any speculation about a cameo in Clayface, given the former film will likely release, at the earliest, in 2027.
While this news may sting for some fans who think the DC Universe is already long overdue for its version of Batman, it’s likely James Gunn knows how high the expectations are for the character, especially following Matt Reeves’ take on the Gotham Guardian. Reducing his debut to a cameo in Clayface, a movie with admittedly small mass market appeal, would likely do more harm than good to the burgeoning franchise.
Clayface is set to release September 11th, 2026. This project has not yet been confirmed by DC Studios. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
