James Gunn Confirms New ‘Elseworlds’ Opening Is Being Developed For DC Studios

]

James Gunn is opening the Elseworlds! The DC Studios co-chair confirms that a new opening is being created for projects set outside of the DC Universe.

One of the biggest points of controversy over the past few weeks was the status of Elseworlds films at DC Studios. Spurred by speculation that Robert Pattinson would be the main Batman of the DC Universe, fans are split about James Gunn and Peter Safran having multiple versions of the same character appear tangent on the silver screen.

Yet it seems James Gunn is doubling down on the Elseworlds gambit. When responding to a fan’s recent inquiry about the lack of DC Universe’s opening in Harley Quinn season 5, Gunn explained that the show was developed without DC Studios’ involvement due to its age, but that they are working on creating a new intro for projects that fall outside of the main continuity.

 “All DC television & film projects are now under DC Studios. Because Harley Quinn was developed long before us we didn’t think it was fair to put the DC Studio fanfare on there,” Gunn explained in a recent post on Threads. “On [The] Penguin, which we had a small hand in developing, we have a different DC Studios anim at the end. We’re currently working on the DC Studios Elseworlds opening.”

Elseworlds Projects In The DC Universe

Currently, fans only know of a handful of projects that fit under the DC Universe Elseworlds banner being described by James Gunn. Those would be the Harley Quinn animated series and any projects that fit under the banner of The Batman like The Penguin. It’s possible that developing an opening for such a small amount of projects suggests that more are secretly in development at DC Studios.

As for what those could be, it’s possible that the black Superman film being developed by Ta-Nehisi Coates and J.J. Abrams is finally getting off the ground after nearly four years of complete silence. Matthew Vaughn has also expressed interest in bringing Henry Cavill back to the silver screen as the Man of Steel in an adaptation of Red Son. Though until a script is in, it’s not likely James Gunn will confirm any of these are fully in the works at DC Studios.
