James Gunn is finally spilling the beans on Superman! A new BTS photo confirms what most fans have expected for years when it comes to the mysterious “U” villain.
The identity of the “U” villain in Superman has been of much debate. Despite being seen in an early BTS photo from the production of the film, James Gunn seemed to be purposefully hiding the character in promotional material for the project. This led many to speculate who they could be: Ulysses, Nuclear Man, maybe even Bizarro? That is, until all the fun was spoiled when a Funko Pop confirmed that the character was Ultraman.
Despite this, James Gunn has remained adamant in not revealing the character’s name in any official capacity. At least, until now. The director recently released a brand new BTS photo from Superman, giving fans their best look yet at the villain’s tattered and worn costume. The caption of the post simple read “Ultraman”, officially revealing the character’s identity to everyone who isn’t combing every piece of footage to find evidence for their crack theory.
Who Is Ultraman In Superman?
Yet this BTS photo simply shifted the question from “Who is the villain?” to “Who is Ultraman?”. There are a lot of theories about what James Gunn is hiding under that mask. Perhaps the biggest piece of speculation comes from the design of the goggles, which many see as similar to the containment suit used for one of Superman’s most iconic villains: Doomsday.
However, Doomsday isn’t the only villain fans have found connections to. The paneling of the suit reminds some fans of Parasite, especially his DCAU version. This has led to speculation that James Gunn will be merging Ultraman, Parasite, and Doomsday into an amalgamated villain for Superman. Though with the movie just a few weeks away, it’s likely it won’t be long until fans finally see under that mysterious mask.
