Will Batman wear trunks in the DC Universe? James Gunn gives his thoughts on the costuming debate during a recent Superman interview.
Nerds across the globe rejoiced when it was revealed that James Gunn would be giving the iconic red trunks back to the Man of Steel in his Superman reboot. Despite being such an iconic part of the costume of so many DC Universe characters, the franchise has slowly moved away from putting their underwear on the outside. Before Gunn, Superman hadn’t worn trunks since Brandon Routh’s take on the hero in 2006, and other heroes like Batman haven’t donned them since the Adam West age!
Which led many to ask the question: Is Superman wearing trunks a sign that Batman will follow in his footsteps? After all, James Gunn will have a heavy hand in creating a new look for the Caped Crusader, and one of the top priorities will likely be differentiating him from the more serious take brought to the silver screen by Robert Pattinson. Giving the character trunks could be a calling card of the new DC Universe.
Will James Gunn Give Batman Trunks?
James Gunn was recently asked about this topic in a chat with ComicBook.com. The interviewer asked if Superman donning trunks was a good sign for other characters copying his style in the DC Universe. While this question broadly applied to other heroes, such as Martian Manhunter and Hawkman, it seems Gunn knew fans were most interested in hearing his answer for Batman.
“I would never [confirm if Superman is the only character to wear trunks] because we haven’t decided. Listen, the trunks are good. So we’ll see. We’ll see what happens. I don’t know. I think it’s less likely that some of the other characters would have trunks than Superman. It’s more a part of Superman’s costume than it is Batman’s, even though he’s had trunks a lot in the comics.”
While James Gunn is certainly right that the trunks certainly are more iconic for Superman than they are for Batman, it would be a shame if the Dark Knight didn’t get to don his tightie whities are least once in the new DC Universe. After 30 years of non-stop angst from the Caped Crusader, it would be nice for fans of the more campy Batman to get a bit of love on the silver screen.
