Was Supergirl always meant to be the second movie in the DC Universe? James Gunn reveals how Woman of Tomorrow started production so soon.
Fans are excited about the new Supergirl movie. And for good reason, too. Not only is it bringing one of the most beloved comics in recent years to the live-action DC Universe, but James Gunn has assembled a star-studded team to bring it to life. With award-nominated actress Milly Alcock set to portray the hero and director Craig Gillespie at the helm, the project is truly shaping up to be something special.
However, some fans question the efficacy of starting the DC Universe off with two films based on the last kids of Krypton. Yet, it seems as though that wasn’t always the plan. While speaking at a recent DC Studios press conference, James Gunn revealed that Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow wasn’t always supposed to come out of the gate swinging. Even though Gunn did want to make a movie based on the comic, it was the script penned by Ana Nogueira that poured rocket fuel on that desire.
“Yeah, we’re now halfway through production on Supergirl. I personally feel incredibly blessed that we came into this job and Ana wrote a script that we loved immediately based on a comic that I love. That was one of the first things that I wanted to adapt upon, you know, thinking about the possibility of running DC.”
How Milly Alcock Was Cast As Supergirl
The movie’s script wasn’t the only part that materialized a lot earlier in production than people might think. James Gunn revealed that one of the first things discussed once the script was finalized was who would play the titular Last Daughter of Krypton in the DC Universe. The answer seemed to come to the group quickly, with Milly Alcock being one of the first to come to mind to headline Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
“It was one of the first things we talked about, one of the first things—I have people don’t know this, I think one of the first things we talked about on the phone was, ‘Well, who would play Supergirl?’ I said, you know, I think that girl from House of the Dragon, what’s her name? She would be really good. That’s a kind of tougher, but different Supergirl.”
Anyone who has read the original Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comics knows James Gunn is certainly right about needing a very different adaptation of the iconic heroine to bring the movie to life in the DC Universe. And with the project apparently already halfway through production, it’s likely fans will be seeing more of Milly Alcock as the Blonde Blockbuster very soon.
