Is James Gunn changing the Kent Farm forever? The director reveals a new direction he took with the iconic Smallville setting in Superman.
The Kent Farm is one of the most important places in Superman lore. The Smallville-based homestead served as the home of Clark Kent during his most formative years. Which is why it’s so shocking that, despite playing a large role in many TV adaptations of the iconic hero, the location has mostly been pushed to the wayside in silver screen adaptations of the Man of Steel.
James Gunn has already been shown to remedy this. The Kent Farm appeared in the very first teaser for the film, and all signs point to it being the home to a number of key emotional beats throughout the film. This left many fans assured that the director would do Smallville justice in Superman, bringing the farmland straight from the cartoons into the realm of live-action.
James Gunn’s Change To Kent Farm
Yet it seems that James Gunn isn’t going to adapt the iconic locale one-for-one. Responding to a recently viral social media post asking if Superman was actually poor, the director revealed that the Kent Farm wouldn’t be a traditional house, but a converted trailer. This was done in order to make the Smallville estate reflect the real-life conditions of the farmers he grew up around.
Of course, this change to the Kent Farm likely won’t affect Superman much beyond the aesthetics. However, it does show that James Gunn and his team are looking over the lore with a critical eye, adapting and changing things as needed in order to make the best story they can for the silver screen. So even though the change may not mean much, it means that Smallville is likely in good hands with this director.
Superman is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
