Do Superman and Lois Lane actually have a good relationship? James Gunn speaks on the main couple of the upcoming DC Universe film.
The relationship between Superman and Lois Lane may be one of the most iconic in all of fiction. It’s a true love story that has been adapted countless times over dozens of incarnations of the DC Universe. So it’s sure that the weight of expectations has been hanging heavy over James Gunn during the production of his Superman reboot.
Luckily, it seems as though James Gunn has a soft spot for such a strong relationship. The director spoke about how Superman and Lois Lane will be portrayed during a set visit attended by Heroic Hollywood founder Umberto Gonzalez. As revealed on the set of the movie, Gunn sought to make a relationship like nothing seen in the superhero genre before.
“I don’t think it’s something we’ve ever seen in any superhero movie ever. It’s a complicated relationship and we really get into it. There are long scenes that are about their relationship and the way they relate and what it would be like for a person who’s this incredibly intelligent, strong-headed, stubborn, skeptical journalist, to have a relationship with someone who can lift a skyscraper.”
How Superman Changes The Relationship
James Gunn isn’t the only member of the Superman crew with thoughts on how the relationship was adapted. Rachel Brosnahan, who plays Lois Lane herself, also spoke about the way the pairing was adapted to the silver screen. She remarks that, while the movie does honor past takes on the characters, it does view them through a new lens.
“Yeah, I think it’s pretty special. There have been so many wonderfully iconic versions of this relationship. And I do think that this particular film is honoring the mythology and the lore that’s been built before, but it’s swinging the lens to look at it from a slightly different angle at a slightly different point in time.”
It’s hard to make an exploration of such a well-trodden relationship feeling fresh. Luckily, it seems as though James Gunn has a few new tricks up his sleeve for adapting Lois Lane and Superman’s love story. Though given just how jam-packed the film is, it’ll be interesting to see how the lovers adapt to the ever-changing landscape of superheroes!
