James Gunn Reveals His Post-Credits Scene Approach For The DC Universe

]

James Gunn is changing the way fans look at a post-credits scene! The Superman director reveals how the DC Universe will approach this superhero staple.

For better or worse, the post-credits scene has become a hallmark of modern movies. While it was pioneered by the MCU, the concept of teasing a conflict or character in the next installment has infected every big franchise – from Mario to Scoob!. This has left many to wonder if James Gunn, one of the most prolific superhero directors, will include one in Superman to help tee up the brand new DC Universe.

Yet it seems that James Gunn’s opinion on the humble post-credits scene has shifted over the years. When speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the director explains that he wants to take a different approach to the concept with the new DC Universe. He says that a post-credits scene shouldn’t make promises to fans unless it “really, really works,” suggesting that Superman likely won’t be delivering much in the way of future teases for the franchise.

“I have a philosophy about post-credit scenes. It’s somewhat related to my own mistakes in my time with Marvel,” Gunn explained “I did not like what I did in [Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2] where we set up Adam Warlock and we set up the Guardians of the Galaxy and we set up all this s**t that I didn’t necessarily plan on…At times when you’re using it just solely to set something up, sometimes you’re screwing yourself over…”

“I started shooting the Peacemaker show and then I shot [the post-credits scene] and then put it in there, so it was easy,” Gunn continued later in the article. “I knew it was coming, so that was fine, but I got to be a little bit careful about it. I do love giving something back to the audience, so I will try to put something in the end credits for audiences to see, because I think it’s great. I love my crew, and I want you to stick around and see who the gaffers were.”

Does Superman Have A Post-Credits Scene?

Given how many checks the MCU has failed to cash, especially in recent years, it makes sense that James Gunn would be adverse to having Superman set up a post-credits scene about a future for the DC Universe that may never come to pass. Though, rest assured, Superman will in-fact have a post-credits scene, as confirmed by James Gunn in the above article.

As for what that post-credits scene could be, it’s possible that James Gunn has a little humorous sting with Krypto or Guy Gardner plan. However, given Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow has already wrapped filming, it’s possible that this is one of the few times the director plans to properly tease a future project in the DC Universe.

Superman is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
