Is a sequel to The Batman officially cooked? James Gunn comments on if Matt Reeves is still attached as the director of the long-awaited project.
Discussion around The Batman has always been supremely interesting. Despite it being confirmed that Matt Reeves has been working on the sequel since the last film released, and The Penguin spin-off coming out last year to critical acclaim, fans have become convinced that the film is cancelled. Many believe it to be the only logical move that James Gunn could make to ensure that there isn’t any confusion between the two universes.
This paranoia culminated recently when a Production Weekly article seemingly revealed that The Batman sequel would be filming next year, notably, without Matt Reeves as director. Despite the outlet not having the most reputable history of accurate information, fans ran with this as confirmation that James Gunn had kicked Reeves off the project and is pushing it out to end the franchise once and for all.
Is Matt Reeves Still Directing The Batman Sequel?
Like many cases of DC fans running wild with speculation, James Gunn stepped in to set the record straight. The director responded to a social media post asking if Matt Reeves was still attached to helm The Batman sequel, simply stating “Yes. Huh?” at the idea that the iconic director would be replaced in his role.
Of course, with this confirmation that Matt Reeves is still working on The Batman sequel comes logical conclusions. Given the director’s past timelines for films of this nature, it’s likely that if Reeves doesn’t start filming soon, the film will be delayed again to October 2028. Though what film James Gunn decides to put in the 2027 slot is yet to be seen.
The Batman sequel is currently set to hit theaters on October 1, 2027. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe, and make sure to stay tuned to our YouTube channel for more content.
