James Gunn Reveals New Details About Supergirl In The DC Universe & Teases Krypton Flashbacks

]

Is Krypton key to Supergirl’s origins? James Gunn reveals some new details about how the iconic heroine will be portrayed in the upcoming DC Universe film.

Supergirl may be the biggest swing James Gunn is currently taking with the new DC Universe. A film headlined by a character who hasn’t had a movie since 1984 which takes the character through the furthest reaches of space beyond Krypton? It’s not just a risky proposition, but an expensive one.

And it seems James Gunn is taking every precaution he can to make the film a success- including keeping a tight leash on spoilers. Fans know almost nothing about how Supergirl will be in the DC Universe besides that she’s from Krypton and has a cousin that looks suspiciously like the guy from Moe & Jerryweather.

What Will Supergirl Be Like In The DC Universe?

Many assume that James Gunn will be taking a classic route when it comes to characterizing Supergirl, making her the slightly less responsible, but still heroic, version of her cousin. However, it seems the DC Universe will be taking things in a much different direction. When speaking to ComicBook.com, Gunn teased that Supergirl may end up being a bit of a girlfailure due to her traumas from Krypton.

“[Flashbacks to Krypton are] always a possibility. But I think those things are really integral to the two characters and the differences between them, and that Clark really does have sort of this really happy childhood. I mean, he had parents who loved him in an easy going upbringing, and it makes him the least dysfunctional of superheroes in so many ways.”

“And Supergirl, especially the DCU Supergirl, she’s kind of a mess. I mean, she’s, she’s had a real issues growing up. And it is based on the comic where she watched person after person after person dying in front of her as her piece of the planet disintegrated.”

Given how much James Gunn has been known to pull from classic comics when building the DC Universe, it’s interesting that the creative team behind Supergirl decided to take such a bold new direction for the character. While Supergirl has certainly been brash in prior adaptations, it seems as though fans are in for quite a treat come this time next year.

Supergirl is set to release on June 26, 2026. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
