James Gunn Reveals The Status Of The Justice League In The DC Universe

]

Does the Justice League exists in the DC Universe? James Gunn lays down the truth about the iconic super team’s status in his upcoming Superman film.

The Justice League is one sticky wicket. Fans thought the characters were all-but-confirmed to appear in Superman with the presence of Guy Gardner, Mister Terrific, and Hawkgirl. That is, until James Gunn decided to pull the rug out from everyone revealing that they were, in fact, the Justice Gang. This left many confused as to if this group was misfits was meant to be the DC Universe’s equivalent of the Justice League, or an in-universe rip-off of an existing team.

James Gunn himself has been a bit cagey about this information, with the only reason fans know of the “Justice Gang” being toy and other merch leaks from the film. Yet the truth about the team’s status in Superman did come out in a recent interview the director did with Entertainment Weekly. When asked if plans for a crossover were on his mind, Gunn admitted that “of course” they were. However, as of the current state of the DC Universe, the Justice League specifically does not exist.

 “Of course, of course,” Gunn remarked “But there is no Justice League in this world…not yet.”

Will The Justice League Form In Superman?

Many still believe that, while the Justice Gang isn’t the Justice League, they are a precursor to the team. The popular theory is that Superman will end with Mister Terrific and Metamorpho leaving the group to form The Terrifics. Meanwhile, Guy Gardner and Hawkgirl will set off to make the DC Universe’s Justice League of America in Peacemaker season 2, with the proper “Justice League” taking a few more years to form.

If this speculation comes true, that’s quite a lot of super teams for the DC Universe. However, given James Gunn plans to hit the ground running with metahumans, it’s not the most farfetched plan. The question really comes down to who will join Superman in the Justice League, aside from the obvious Batman and Wonder Woman. And, perhaps more importantly, when their own projects will find the time to release in Chapter 1.

Superman is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
