The Creature Commandos were almost much scarier! James Gunn reveals which members of the obscure team he scrapped from the roster during production.
Creature Commandos turned out to be a surprising hit as the first installment of the new DC Universe. Not only did the series do much better than expected critically, but James Gunn managed to do what James Gunn does best and get fans to fall in love with a team of obscure comic book misfits. Characters like Nina Mazursky and Doctor Phosphorous, who were barely considered D-Listers before, are now household names across the world.
However, it seems the roster for Creature Commandos wasn’t always set in stone. When speaking on the development of the series, James Gunn revealed that a number of monsters were considered for the team, before ultimately being scrapped. This includes some fairly well-known villains from the DC Universe, such as Man-Bat and Solomon Grundy, as well as more obscure picks like Vincent Velcoro.
“I definitely considered Wolfpack,” Gunn wrote in a recent post on Threads. “And, especially, Man-Bat (one of my faves). But I knew I wanted to tell Weasel’s story so it felt like too many rabid and fuzzy characters. I considered Vincent Velcoro but wanted to choose a ‘creature’ far outside the usual roster from another part of DC – so I went with Dr. Phosphorous instead. I also considered Solomon Grundy, another favorite, but was pretty set on Frankenstein.”
The Scrapped Monsters Of Creature Commandos
Interestingly, despite Creature Commandos setting up a second season in its final moments, James Gunn neglected to include any of the characters listed above. While it’s still possible that they’ll be on a revised version of the team heading into season 2, it’s possible these scrapped members of the team might find themselves at home in other corners of the DC Universe.
Perhaps the most important one for this conversation is Man-Bat. The character played a large role in the animated adaptation of Batman and Son, a comic set to have a big role in the DC Universe due to its ties to the upcoming Batman: The Brave and The Bold reboot. It’s possible that James Gunn plans to introduce the character to audiences on the silver screen instead of including him in Creature Commandos. Though given the current status of the film, it’s not clear when that would happen!
