Julia Garner Breaks Silence On Being Cast As Silver Surfer In ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’

Did Marvel find the perfect Silver Surfer? Julia Garner speaks out on joining the cast of The Fantastic Four: First Steps as the Silver Surfer.

Marvel had an interesting run when announcing the cast of The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Some characters were seemingly pulled directly from the minds of fans, with Vanessa Kirby playing Sue Storm and Ebon Moss-Bachrach landing the coveted role of The Thing. However, other castings came far out of left field, such as Pedro Pascal landing the role of Reed Richards and Julia Garner playing Galactus’ herald Silver Surfer.

While fans have grown to love Pedro Pascal being cast as the titular Mister Fantastic in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Julia Garner has mostly stayed out of the limelight when it comes to online discussion. Yet it seems Garner is just as excited to join the Marvel universe as some fans are to see her in it. Speaking to ComicBook.com, the actress teased the amazing work from the cast and crew, while keeping details about her role as the Silver Surfer close to her chest.

“I mean, just how big it is,” Garner explained when asked what shocked her most about preparing for the role of Silver Surfer. “It’s a big universe, and I feel so grateful I get to be a little part of it to be honest. Everybody on that job, I think the casting is phenomenal and they’re so wonder. And [director] Matt Shakman is amazing. I’m very excited.”

Julia Garner’s Role As Silver Surfer In The MCU

Despite what many people believe, Julia Garner isn’t playing a gender-swapped Silver Surfer in The Fantastic Four: The First Steps. In the comics, Norrin Radd is Galactus’ iconic chrome herald. The MCU is taking a different approach by having Garner play Shalla Bal, Norrin Radd’s true love for whom he became a herald in exchange for her protection.

Rumors suggest that Julia Garner won’t be in the MCU for long, with her role in The Fantastic Four: First Steps being her only outing as Shalla Bal. Given it’s heavily rumored that the project will take place in another universe, it’s likely that her version of the Silver Surfer will likely be left behind or even die as the Marvel’s first family make their way into the Sacred Timeline, potentially opening the door for Norrin Radd to return as the herald of Galactus on the silver screen.
