On April 14, 2025, pop star Katy Perry returned to Earth after a groundbreaking spaceflight aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket. She was part of an all-female crew that included journalist Gayle King, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, former NASA engineer Aisha Bowe, film producer Kerianne Flynn, and Lauren Sánchez, fiancée of Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos.

The mission, designated NS-31, marked a historic milestone as the first all-female crewed spaceflight since Valentina Tereshkova’s solo mission in 1963 . The 10-minute suborbital journey took the crew just past the Kármán line, the internationally recognized boundary of space, allowing them to experience several minutes of weightlessness before safely returning to Earth.
During the flight, Perry performed a rendition of Louis Armstrong’s classic “What a Wonderful World,” a song she had previously covered. Her fellow crew members had hoped she would sing one of her own hits, like “Roar” or “Firework,” but Perry chose this reflective piece to honor Earth and inspire future generations of women in space. Upon landing, Perry kissed the ground in a heartfelt gesture, symbolizing her deep appreciation for the experience.
The mission was Blue Origin’s 11th human flight and the 31st overall for the New Shepard program, which has now carried 52 people to the edge of space. While the flight’s brief duration sparked some social media reactions, the crew’s achievement was widely celebrated as a significant step toward inclusivity in space exploration.
