Could the Gambit film have been great? Channing Tatum’s co-star Lizzy Caplan reveals new details about the infamous cancelled solo film.
The Gambit film may be the most well-known piece of cancelled superhero media. The project was born from the mind of Channing Tatum, who fought to revive the character on the silver screen just as Ryan Reynolds had to Deadpool. However, after years of the project stalling, there finally seemed hope for the movie to come to life. Lizzy Caplan was locked to co-star, with Tatum sharing directorial duties with longtime partner Reid Carolin…only for the project to get axed very soon after.
Yet it seems the project may have been even closer to coming to life than fans first thought. Speaking publicly on the project with Business Insider, Lizzy Caplan revealed that a filming date was already locked for the Gambit film. However, Channing Tatum’s outing as the beloved anti-hero was ultimately cancelled even as the project was finalizing details with producers.
“We got down the road, we were gonna shoot it. I think there was a start date. I had meetings with Channing, and there were a couple different…we had a director, then we didn’t, but I had multiple meetings with Channing and the other producers.”
The Plot Of The Cancelled Gambit Film
Much like any other superhero project, plot details about the Gambit film were kept tight under wraps, and were ultimately buried with the project when it was cancelled. While Lizzy Caplan couldn’t break any NDAs about the movie, she did reveal that the goal was to make a “screwball romantic comedy” with Channing Tatum, suggesting a far-lighter tone than something like the Deadpool films.
“They wanted to do, like, a ’30s kind of screwball romantic comedy set in that world,” Caplan explained while reflecting on the project. “Which would have been really fun.”
Even though it doesn’t seem that the Gambit film would’ve been enough to save Fox’s X-Men universe, it’s certainly a shame that the film ended up cancelled despite being so close to completion. Though given how popular the character has become following Channing Tatum’s portrayal in Deadpool and Wolverine and X-Men ’97, it’s possible that Lizzy Caplan gets called back to the world of capes and spandex!
