Are the X-Men headed straight to Disney Plus? Producer Brad Winderbaum reveals how Marvel’s beloved mutant team fits into their upcoming slate for the MCU.
With the MCU being in one of its most controversial time periods in history, fans have begun to look beyond the Multiverse Saga for hope that Marvel can make a true rebound. And when it comes to the Mutant Saga, there’s one name on everyone’s minds: The X-Men. While a reboot for the team has been confirmed for quite some time, details about it are rather scarce.
One of the most exciting rumors surrounding the X-Men reboot is that it won’t stand alone in the MCU. Rather, Marvel is developing a Disney Plus series alongside it that will focus on younger and lesser known members of the team. This rumor excited long-time fans of the team who feel that Marvel often focuses on the most iconic members of the team, leaving dozens of characters fertile for their own stories to the wayside in order to facilitate the 27th war between Professor X and Magneto.
Are The X-Men Getting A Disney Plus Series?
This rumor seemingly got so big that Marvel felt the need to respond, a rarity when it comes to the avalanche of rumors about the MCU dumped onto the internet every single day. Longtime producer Brad Winderbaum broke down the studios’ plans for the X-Men in a recent interview with ScreenRant. He revealed that, while they are working on a reboot for the big screen, there’s currently no plans to bring the team to Disney Plus beyond X-Men ’97.
“I think anybody could say anything online,” Winderbaum explained. “And it hits the rumor mill and people get excited. Right now, we are still working on X-Men 97 season 2. It’s coming together amazingly, and the scripts for season 3 are insane. That is certainly scratching the X-Men itch for me on television. And there is an X-Men feature in development right now, so that is the focus of X-Men currently.”
While it makes sense for Marvel to be putting their X-Men eggs into one reboot basket, this does come as a disappointment for fans who were hoping the team would have the chance to get fleshed out a bit more on Disney Plus. Of course, it’s possible that the project materializes as the team becomes more cemented as a mainstay in the MCU. But for now, it seems that rumor is simply just another rumor in the wind.
