McDonald's Worker Who Turned In Luigi Mangione May Not Even Get Paid That Reward Money!

]

We still can’t believe anyone saw Luigi Mangione eating by himself in a Pennsylvania McDonald’s and thought… hey, that’s probably that killer from NYC! But that’s apparently what happened!

After the early morning murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson last week, the local police and feds sprang into action with — pretty inarguably — a lot more enthusiasm than for all the other killings going on in the city. As for why, we’ll leave that up to y’all…

But importantly cops were apparently stumped by the masked killer who disappeared into Central Park, leaving behind only a bag full of Monopoly money. All they had were a couple sketchy security cam photos. So the authorities asked the public for help. The NYPD offered a $10k reward for info that led to the capture and arrest of the killer. The FBI pitched in a whopping $50k. That’s big money!

So while the McDonald’s worker who ultimately called the cops on their “suspicious” customer may not have made any friends in some very angry circles… hey, at least she got paid, right? We mean, she works at Mickey D’s, $60k is a HUGE win for her. If she gets really sick, it may even cover a small fraction of her bills!

Well… about that… She may not even get the reward money! And definitely no time soon!

It turns out getting reward money from the cops is a really complicated, annoying gauntlet of bureaucracy that a recipient has to fight through to get their money. Kind of like dealing with health insurance companies, by the sound of it. Huh.

First off, the NYPD reward is through Crime Stoppers, and if the worker called local authorities and not the Crime Stoppers number they could be SOL.

And they apparently need to check back on that same line or on the Crime Stoppers page to follow the status of the case. Why? Oh, because you don’t get the money unless the tip leads to a conviction. Even if Luigi gets convicted, they’ll still have to weigh the value of the tip. Ultimately the NYC Police Foundation and the Crime Stoppers Board of Directors will decide whether to pay the caller. Something tells us they’d rather not part with the money… and we wonder if anyone actually holds them accountable for, well… denying claims.

The FBI’s reward money could be even tougher to get!

First off, the feds also require a successful conviction, which is not a sure thing at all. And also it tends to take FOREVER for these things to go to trial!

But also… the tipster can’t nominate themselves for the reward money just because they called it in. The DOD or other body has to put the person’s name forward. And if they don’t deem the person’s information unique or valuable enough, they might not bother.

Not only that, the amount of reward money isn’t set in stone! They announce $50k, but they may deem only a fraction of that amount go to the tipster depending on the value they place on the info given. And who knows how they measure it!

It really sounds like getting money they’re owed is going to be really tough… But hey, at least they don’t have an AI program automatically denying them, right?
