Meghan Markle thought she’d be a very different working mother as a royal than she is today.
In Tuesday’s episode of her podcast, Confessions of a Female Founder, Meghan revealed that before she welcomed her children, Prince Archie, 6, and Princess Lilibet, 3, she believed they’d play a very present role in her work life. The Suits alum explained:
“I will say, for myself, especially when they are baby babies and before I was a mom, I’ve always wanted to be a mom. I was like, ‘Oh gosh, I’m going to give a speech with a baby on my hip.’ I had a whole vision.”
She kind of tried to do that by including Archie in a royal tour of Africa in 2019. She and Prince Harry brought the little boy, then just a baby, along with them, and he even made a public appearance while meeting Bishop Desmond Tutu. There were some super cute pics of Archie at the time as everyone was excited to see the new royal out and about. See (below):
However, just months later, everything drastically changed. When the Duke and Duchess of Sussex chose to step away from their royal duties amid lots of media scrutiny, they totally removed their children from public life. They avoid showing the children’s faces online and have kept them away from public events. No babies on hips, that’s for sure.

They’re unlikely to return to the UK anytime soon after Harry lost his legal fight for security, too! Totally different from Meg’s dream!
Acknowledging the shift, she reflected on the pod:
“Granted, I had a lot of external things happening by the time I had both pregnancies and both babies. But it was not the way I envisioned it.”
The one thing that hasn’t changed is the As Ever founder’s desire for the little ones to see her doing her job:
“For me, it’s so important my kids see me as a working mom.”
Things would have been SO different if they hadn’t left the royal fam! It’s kinda hard to imagine, to be honest! Who knows, maybe even if they hadn’t walked away from their roles, the kids might’ve still taken a back seat for privacy at some point — we only see little bits of Prince William and Princess Catherine‘s kids, for example — but it sounds like Meghan was really eager to have them involved. Perhaps one day when they are older they’ll be able to do that.
