Is Michael Douglas officially retired from the MCU? The iconic actor reveals if he ever plans to make a return as the beloved Scientist Supreme Hank Pym.
Despite being a founding member of the Avengers in the comics, Hank Pym has had a shockingly low amount of screen time in the MCU. Aside from the briefest of brief cameos in Avengers: Endgame, the character has been completely relegated to the Ant-Man saga of film. Which makes sense, given that Michael Douglas does play the original Ant-Man, but it does seem like at least a small bit of a missed opportunity on the part of the franchise.
Yet with the Ant-Man trilogy coming to an end, and a fourth film not likely on the horizon, fans have been wondering if Hank Pym’s time in the MCU is truly over. After all, signs point to the original plan for Quantumania culminating in the death of Michael Douglas’ character, leaving it unclear if they have any plans for him to return following his survival.
Will Michael Douglas Return As Ant-Man?
With everyone’s focus back on the MCU with filming for Avengers: Doomsday in full swing, every actor that was previously in the franchise that’s currently on the press circuit is being asked if there’s any plans for them to appear in the film. When asked about his return as Hank Pym, Michael Douglas seems content with where his character stands in the franchise, especially given his growing responsibilities as a producer.
“I don’t think so. I had the experience, and I was excited to do it. I’d never done a green screen picture before,” Douglas explains to Deadline. “I did the The Kominsky Method because I wanted to work with Chuck Lorre and try some comedy. But I’m enjoying my hiatus and enjoying my life. It was overwhelming running the production company and acting at the same time.”
Given it’s nearing a decade since the first Ant-Man hit theaters, it makes sense that Michael Douglas is content with hanging up his costume as Hank Pym. It’s certainly a shame for fans that wished the iconic character would have had a bigger presence in the MCU. Though, given just how many characters are vying for screen time in the franchise at the moment, it’s likely that the character wouldn’t get a beefy return regardless!
