Is this the real cause of Miley Cyrus’ previous troubled relationship with dad Billy Ray?
Perezcious readers know there has been tension in the family, especially between the Hannah Montana alums. Miley took her mom Tish Cyrus’ side when her parents got divorced in 2022 and was not on good terms with Billy Ray – something that became clear as day when she snubbed him at the Grammys. We heard their relationship fractured because his much younger ex-wife Firerose got in between them, and what worsened matters is the leaked audio of Miley’s father calling her a “skank.”

For a long time, the pop star seemed uninterested in reconnecting with Billy Ray even as he extended olive branches on social media. However, things have since changed! Miley recently revealed they reconciled. And now, the singer is opening up about her parents following years of drama.
During an appearance on The Interview podcast from The New York Times on Saturday, Miley revealed she took on “a lot of” her Tish’s “pain” from the marriage with Billy:
“As I’ve gotten older, I’m respecting my parents as individuals instead of as parents — because my mom’s really loved my dad for her whole life, and I think being married to someone in the music industry and not being a part of it is obviously really hard. I think I took on some of my mom’s hurt as my own because it hurt her more than it hurt me as an adult, and so I owned a lot of her pain.”
We can imagine seeing her mom so “hurt” for so long caused a lot of resentment toward Billy and led her to distance herself from him. But thankfully, they’ve all seemed to get to a better place.
For Miley, she attributes the reconciliation to “timing” — and the fact that her parents both moved on from their divorce! Tish is married to Dominic Purcell, while Billy Ray is dating Elizabeth Hurley. Yeah, it’s still shocking to say that! Miley continued:
“I think timing is everything. Now that my mom is so in love with my stepdad [Dominic Purcell], who I completely adore, and now that my dad, I see him finding happiness, too — I can love them both as individuals instead of as a parental pairing. I’m being an adult about it.”
However, Miley recognized it wasn’t easy to get to that place of understanding:
“At first it’s hard, because the little kid in you reacts before the adult in you can go, ‘Yes, that’s your dad, but that’s just another person that deserves to be in his bliss and to be happy.’ My child self has caught up.”
Good! The Wrecking Ball artist also tries to have a lot of compassion for her entire family these days, especially Tish and Billy Ray who face constant attention about their relationships because of her fame:
“I just try to be more compassionate to my parents, because I hate that for them. I mostly hate it for my siblings because they didn’t choose that kind of highlight on themselves. But for me, I’ve gotten so used to it that I’m like, ‘If this is the symptom — that sometimes we deal with these embarrassing or difficult public opinions — then that’s something I’m willing to take to have the life that we have.’”
As for her dad? She pointed out that her level of success eclipsing the Achy Breaky Heart singer’s “added a level of complexity,” adding:
“I think it would be hard for anybody with a dream to see somebody else achieving theirs in a way that you see for yourself, but I do think love conquered all. He can still find the pride in me. But it would be delusional for any of us to think that that doesn’t add a level of complication to our already complicated dynamic.”
It’s sad to think, but we bet it caused some feelings of jealousy. But ultimately, Miley knows in her gut that her father “would want” everything she has created for herself all these years. She said she learned to get “rid” of those feelings of guilt or shame she had over the matter through EMDR therapy:
“At times in my life, guilt and shame were a driver for me. I had a hard time accepting that I could suffer because of how blessed I am. I don’t think that’s actually played too much of a part between me and my dad, though, because I have to have the faith that, like any dad, he would want this for me.”
We hope so!
At the end of the day, it is just great to know that the Cyrus family are no longer feuding! Cheers to their peaceful new era! Watch the interview below:
